A day at the park

...a fun day at the park yesterday. A small group of volunteers under the direction of Bill Tefft, spent a good chunk of the day installing the long awaited paver paths in Whiteside park by the playground area.

The paver product is Azek. It is a really cool recycled plastic product available at Voyageur Lumber here in Ely.

Here are some pictures:

That's Bill on the far left working the rake. He has been relentless in getting this project organized and completed. Most of us on park and rec have kinda fallen away and got busy with other things, but Bill has made it a priority to get this part of the project done before the 4th of July and today was going to be the day, rain or shine, (and being Ely in June we got plenty of both).  ...and Miss Park and Rec herself, Heidi, behind the lamp post on the right. She lends her ever cheerful presence to every park project and makes it always a pleasant day.

I didn't get the names of some of these young people that just couldn't stand by watching and got drawn in to the process... I expect they went home with something to talk about... they were definitely the only ones with any energy left at the end of the day.
...all in all, just a good fun day in the park.

In a time where money is always short and budgets are thin, if you look around in Ely, (not just the park but everywhere), you will find it is the volunteers in the community who are making the good things happen.

17"x20" pencil drawing on Bristol Board "Coach Dempsey"

Sometimes I find a picture of a face that just cries out to be drawn.

This was one of those faces.

I was intrigued by the reflection in the sunglasses. It could be any guy standing anywhere but you can see by the reflections, he is clearly standing in a dugout at a baseball field. Could be any dugout, any baseball field, any town... but the cap in unmistakeably Blizzard.

The picture was posted on twitter by the owner of the owner of the Minnesota Baseball Academy, Adam Barta.

...anyway, I felt compelled to take this on as a project for myself. The drawing measures 17" wide by 20" high. It is graphite pencil on Bristol board:

Ipe decking and summer bugs, Ely Minnesota

I never got around to showing pictures of this deck we finished over the winter on the house that we have been finishing up:

Sunshine on an Ipe deck near Ely by huisman concepts inc
The deck is made of Ipe, (pronounced ee-pay). It is a Brazilian Hardwood that is extremely dense and strong, (and incidentally, available locally at Voyageur Lumber in Ely).

Huisman, ipe deck,
This deck has already started to atain the silver/gray color of the weathered Ipe. They do make an oil for it, but I think the best thing with this type of wood is to just let it weather.
Ipe deck, lake, scenic view over lake,
Overlooking the lake. A perfect late spring/early summer day near Ely Minnesota with the blue sky reflecting in the surface of the water...
 ipe deck, ely,
Rather than have the visual obstruction of a railing around the part of the deck that would have been high enough to fall off and get hurt, and also to add visual interest, we dropped this portion of the deck.

Interesting grain in ipe decking,
The true beauty of the Ipe decking can be seen when you take a closer look. The grain patterns are amazing.
Ipe grain patterns,

Ipe grain, awesome,
Truly a visually spectacular wood.

A couple evenings ago we found this spectacular Luna Moth
hanging on a branch in a tree just off the deck:

Luna Moth, (Actias luna), near Ely Minnesota.

When we think of the bugs of summer here in Northern Minnesota, we often forget about the more beautiful ones.
Speaking of bugs, I have a sister who has an strange interest in photographing bugs, among other things... Like this one:

More of her photos, (not all bugs), can be seen here:
