The Gypcrete overpour

This week the "Gypcrete" over-pour happened.
As I talked about in my last post here:
http://huismanconcepts.com/in-floor-heat-tubes/
We had all the in-floor heat tubes down and ready last week.
The guys from Floor Technologies came up this week and we had perfect weather, (no snowstorms), with an early temp of about 0 degrees but a high nearer 30 which was nice so we could have the door and some windows opened a little bit and still maintain the 50 degrees we need for the Gypcrete to set up.
They start by mixing the stuff on the back of their truck using sand that they brought in combined with the mix in their bags.:

They pump the mixture through the hose into the house. It is almost a water consistency so, for the most part, it is self leveling. We are shooting for an inch and a half in thickness.

...and working their way out the door.

Amazingly, you could walk on it a couple hours later but we waited till...

...the next day...

Of course, as you could imagine, the moisture in the building now is huge so we have several dehumidifiers going to try to eliminate it as much as possible to avoid too much condensation on the windows. Again, fortunately, we have temperatures in the 20s for a few days so the condensation is not to much of a problem. Still we want to dry the place out and it is not quite warm enough to open all the windows.

Always cool to see that kind of stuff happen. They were a good bunch of guys that went about the task and got it done.

...on a more somber note...
I stopped by the ball field on Friday just to look... not very encouraging, I'm afraid. And we are supposed to get 12" on Monday...

In-floor heat tubes

A bit more progress on the timber frame project:
We had the heat tubes installed last week, ready for the over-pour.
Because of the snow storm on Tuesday in most of the state, our over-pour guys canceled.
We never did get the storm they were predicting here but I know many parts of the state got hit hard and the guys that do this for us come from Hamel, Minnesota so... long drive with trucks through potential snowstorm... best to put it off for another day.

Hopefully that day will be tomorrow. We are ready.

The tube system has been pressurized with air right now while we do the over-pour so we will know right away if we do some damage somehow that results in a leak and we can fix it right away.
In the end the tubes will be filled with fluid, the fluid is heated by the boiler and becomes the "in-floor" heating system for the main level of the house.

The over-pour consists of a "Gypsum" type lightweight concrete product that we can install tile or wood floor over later.

This is another point in the project where I take lots of pictures. Not that we ever want to be drilling holes or putting fasteners in this floor anywhere, but sometimes it's nice to have pictures for reference. Here are a few of the many:

As I was driving by the school on Friday in the snow storm, I looked over at the baseball field. There is still over 2 feet of snow out there and Friday added about 8" to that. I think the first game is scheduled for April 1st... Right now it's not looking good.

Then as I turned around and was driving by the park, I spotted something unusual, (well maybe not for Ely), an adult playing on the swings with their kid. At this point the snow was falling at a rate of about 2 inches per hour. On a spring day in March, it is hard to find something amusing in all this, but this comes close:

All that, of course, leaves behind a particularity beautiful and picturesque winter day like the one we have here now. Particularly beautiful and picturesque, that is, if this were January.

I had a clear crisp half moon sky and 9 degrees below zero here this morning...

Enter that in the log.

March 16th, 2014

The drywall hanging is well underway here now that the electrical and plumbing rough-in is, for the most part, completed. Here are some shots of the drywall being installed around the timber frame structure:

In some of the above shots you can also see the loft floor has been installed. In this particular home, the loft floor is a simple one layer floor consisting of 2x6 tongue and groove decking installed with the "V"-groove down so that the underside becomes the ceiling and the flat side on top becomes the floor of the loft. Here are a couple pictures where you can see it from the top side and the bottom:

At the top of the stars to the loft, the only place for switches is to cut them into a large timber post:

We had 20 degrees below zero again this morning. I hope that is the last of that sort of thing.
But the sun is strong and it warmed up fast. High in the 20s.
The dirt roads are beginning to show where the sun hits them but there is still at least a couple feet deep snow in the woods and, more ominously, on the baseball field...
I think spring will come... eventually.

Progress, interior work

After suffering through some cold work on the outside of the building, the plumbing and electrical are far enough along that we can start some drywall work. I try to take as many pictures of the plumbing and electrical in the walls before they are covered. They are often handy to have for future reference.

This is in the building that I had mentioned here in a few blog posts last year, but haven't talked about much in a while.

...and here are some of those terribly uninteresting pictures:

Did I mention the plumber was on site?

Seems like there is just a lot of winter going on right now. It's about all anybody talks about or thinks about. But it is March 2nd and we are hopefull...
